It's official: MAGNETISM been announced, and not just anywhere: at APEC 2026, one of the most important international conferences on power electronics. This year, the conference was held in San Antonio, Texas, from March 22 to 26.
After a long journey, we presented a poster in the Magnetic Applications & Design dialogue session, celebrated the last day of the conference, in which we introduced the SPICE model generation tool that was available in esaFEMM.
SPICE Component Generation - a feature about to land
SPICE has been widely adopted by industry as an open-source analog electronic circuit simulator tool for simulating power converters. It enables designers to verify circuit behavior, transient responses, and stability before manufacturing and assembling prototypes. However, standard SPICE models often lack detailed representations of nonlinear magnetic behavior, leading to inaccurate predictions. In addition, the component has often been designed specifically for the application, so the SPICE model directly does not exist.
In esaFEMM (MAGNETISiM predecesor) a SPICE model generator was implemented. The idea was simple: extract the component's impedance matrix at different frequencies using FEA simulations, fit these results using Vector Fitting algorithm, and implement the resulting state-space model in SPICE using SPICE standard components. A netlist and a symbol were provided to the user. This way, the simulated component could be placed in larger SPICE simulations, for example a whole converter, to test if the design complains with the initial requirements.
Not available... yet
Although we are planning to implement this useful tool in MAGNETISiM, you will have to wait some time to use it. We are working hard to improve the fitting and modeling algorithms to make sure the models support any kind of frequency response... we know you like to make complex designs :). For now, subscribe to receive the latest updates: MAGNETISiM landing is close!
